Dedicate a tree in Chile   The Monkey Puzzle Project

The quirky Monkey Puzzle graces many gardens in the UK, yet this ancient tree is at risk of extinction in its natural habitat of Southern Chile and Argentina. Half of the original monkey puzzle forest has been lost due to logging and land clearance for farming and tree plantations. The Monkey Puzzle, a tree that has been around for millions of years, surviving the catastrophic event that wiped out the dinosaurs, is now struggling to survive.

The Monkey Puzzle can live for up to 1,000 years, reach heights of 100 ft and grow as far south as trees can grow. No wonder, perhaps, that it is such an odd looking tree - it’s had to be tough, tall and spiky to get this far!

Working with the Universidad de Concepción, the Global Trees Campaign is working to save this ancient tree. Our tree planting is focused on a unique stand of monkey puzzles found clinging on in the heart of Chile’s vast pine plantations, at the coastal community of Villa Araucaria (Araucaria is the scientific name for the Monkey Puzzle).

For the local people the uniqueness of this population could bring economic benefits through ecotourism; for the tree as a whole, this site represents a flagship for its survival.

Your gift will help the people at Villa Araucaria to secure land for planting, to grow new seedlings and to plant and care for the young monkey puzzle trees.   The recipient of your gift will be sent:
