Wintry wedding gifts make comeback - 23/12/09

Wedding gifts for summer brides are becoming less common, with more and more couples favouring the tradition of the Victorian winter wedding, according to research from family history experts.

After analysing 19th century marriage records, findmypast.co.uk found most people chose to wed in October, November and December. But the tradition faded as 20th century couples opted to take their vows in bright summer sunshine.

Since 2007, there has been a 200% rise in winter weddings, according to research completed by the wedding website Confetti.

During the economic crisis couples have been making huge savings while - perhaps unwittingly - following in the traditions of their Victorian ancestors. Famous couples to have exchanged? vows in the winter include Billie Piper and Laurence Fox in 2007 and Madonna and Guy Ritchie back in 2000.

Debra Chatfield, marketing manager at findmypast.co.uk, said: "Marriage certificates are invaluable records for family historians looking to discover not only who, but where and when their ancestors married.

"Marriage certificates usually also recorded the name of the bride and groom's fathers, meaning these records can help people trace back a further generation of their family tree.

"The large number of records now available online has transformed the way in which the public can explore the past, resulting in family history becoming one of the fastest growing hobbies in the UK."
