Wedding gift industry over the moon - 15/10/09

Thousand of brides, grooms, world-wide well-wishers and the wedding gift industry were over the moon to be part of one of the biggest mass weddings in history.

In one of the most elaborate ceremonies of it kind ever seen, Unification Church founder the Rev Sun Myung Moon joined an estimated 5,000 happy couples in holy matrimony.

The spectacle in Seoul, South Korea, which also doubled as a blessing for another 5,000 couple renewing their wedding vows, had a global audience estimated at 20,000.

The scene involved row after row of white-gowned brides, black-suited grooms in red ties and a sprinkling of kimonos worn by the sizeable Japanese contingent.

"I'm a little bit nervous," said Rie Furuta, 25, from Tokyo. She had met her groom, Tadakuni Sano, also from Japan, only three times since their marriage was arranged in March.

She was walking in the footsteps of the first 24 couples married by Moon in his first mass wedding nearly fifty years ago, eagerly joining the others as they posed for photos, sang and cheered as the rehearsal got under way.
