Wedding gift for Atlantic rower - 15/02/10
A Briton who rowed across the Atlantic to marry his fiancee ended up arriving late for his wedding at a Caribbean venue.
Neil Ward, 38, was part of the 12-member crew of Britannia III, who set off from the Canary Islands on January 4 as part of the Atlantic Rowing Race.
After covering 2,000 gruelling miles the team arrived in Barbados on Thursday, a few days later than scheduled, which forced Mr Ward and fiancee Louise Robertson, 29, to put off the wedding by a day.
But the nuptials took place this weekend in bright sunshine at Almond Beach Village and the couple were given a "guard of honour" with oars lined up by the rowing team.
The bride wore a white wedding gown, while the groom was resplendent in beige shorts with a pale blue shirt.
Ms Robertson, a ski instructor, said: "We had no idea where or how we wanted to get married.
"When Neil joked he'd row the Atlantic just to marry me, that was the idea that stuck."
Mr Ward, an offshore oil worker and expedition organiser, hails from Pembrokeshire and has taken up several extreme challenges in the past. The couple now live in the resort of Les Contamines, near Mont Blanc in the French Alps.
