Stephen Fry's Special Mothers Day Gift - 21/03/09
Television presenter Stephen Fry has come up with an "extraordinary" Mother's day gift to honour his mother this year.
The "smartest man on TV" has dedicated a hectare of the Cambridgeshire Fen using the online charity Healthy Planet.
While four million Brits opt to send flowers for Mothers Day, Stephen has adopted the land to support the Great Fen Project conservation area, which he has been president of since 2006.
Stephen said: "The fens stand as one of the most misunderstood, neglected and extraordinary features of the British landscape. I am proud to be involved with a new drive to protect, understand and evangelise this unique part of our country."
Healthy Planet urges others to come forward to dedicate some fenland for a special Mothers Day Gift, with the chance of becoming Stephen's neighbour as well as protecting land for the future.
There are 77,000 parks and reserves to choose from worldwide and people can even choose to adopt a favourite holiday location or their own home.
Once the land is adopted, a virtual plaque appears online on Google Maps or Google Earth. These special gift ideas allow 90% of the adoption fee to go towards on-the-ground conservation work.
