Special gift for Kifu the gorilla - 08/04/09
The special gift of a fruit-and-nut laden Easter egg did not last long once Kifu the gorilla got his hands on it.
Keepers at Howletts Wild Animal Park near Canterbury in Kent decided that the 22-year-old father of eight deserved a bit of a treat.
They came up with the idea for the unusual gift to liven up the day, which the big silverback would normally spend foraging around his environment for food with his five mates and their offspring.
Howletts and nearby Port Lympne together house 74 gorillas, and are part of the conservation-focused Aspinall Foundation, which conserves endangered species and returns them to the wild.
It aims to continue to expand the Kent gorilla colony while using its rescue and rehabilitation programme in the Congo and Gabon to return captive-bred gorillas to their natural habitats.
Western Lowland gorillas typically spend 30% of the day eating, 40% resting and 30% travelling in their natural environment of the lowland forests of equatorial Africa.
