Old brands top Christmas gifts list - 22/07/09

Parents looking for Christmas gifts this year are expected to turn to tried and tested toy brands during the recession.

One piece of merchandise tipped to be popular this Christmas is a voice-altering helmet from the summer blockbuster hit Transformers.

The Transformers Bumblebee helmet, which mixes any voice to sound like the robotic character from the popular film, will join Lego, Barbie and the Rubik's puzzles in this year's top 10, according to toy store Hamleys.

Nigel Wheatley, head of retail and marketing at the store, said: "From the traditional classics like Lego, Barbie and Slinky, to dressing up dreams and the latest in electronic wizardry, we have one of our best ranges in years wrapped up for a bumper Christmas this year."

The toy store also believes it will have a winner on its hands when the first Lego board game hits the shelves. These allow players to change the layout of the game every time, and will prove popular at £20, Hamleys said.

Rubik's 360, the spherical new generation of Rubik's Cube, will appeal to puzzle fans, while a new Barbie wearing a dress celebrating 50 years of the Barbie doll will also be on sale.
