New Year's Day baby gift for couple - 07/01/10
New Year's Day brought an early baby gift for a Wales woman whose son arrived in the back of an ambulance on a toll bridge en route to hospital.
Joanne Harvey, 35, gave birth to baby Iwan just five minutes after the vehicle was forced to make an emergency stop at the bridge on the River Cleddau between Neyland and Pembroke Dock.
The newborn's father Chris Jones, 43, said:?"It was all a bit stressful but it turned out to be a great start to the new year.
"The roads were really icy that day and when Jo went into labour the ambulance was there within seven minutes of the 9am call-out. It was terrific."
But when it became clear that the baby would not wait until they reached Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest, the paramedics made an?unscheduled stop at the bridge.
The child weighed a healthy 7lb 14oz at birth, and mother and son were taken to the hospital. By?5pm the family was back at home toasting the new arrival with a glass of champagne.
Mr Jones, a civil servant, added: "The paramedics said that it was their first call-out of the year and that it was a really nice start to 2010 for them."
A computer geek friend suggested Binary as a baby name in reference to the birth date, 01/01/10, but the couple rejected it.
