Musical birthday gifts for Mandela - 21/07/09

Nelson Mandela`s 91st birthday has been marked with a special gift - a star-studded tribute concert held at New York's Radio City Music Hall.

Stevie Wonder headlined the singing celebration in aid of the former South African president, with other big names such as Alicia Keys, Gloria Gaynor and Wyclef Jean all making an appearance.

Lil' Kim and Cyndi Lauper joined forced for a duet, while the crowd cheered as the legendary Aretha Franklin burst into song at the first ever 'Mandela Day`.

Hollywood actor Morgan Freeman, who will play Mandela in a new film about his life, was among speakers at the event and President Barack Obama also sent a video message to those in attendance at the hall.

It has been reported that Mandela was not fit enough to attend to show held in his honour, but instead send a message which said: "It is on your hands to create a better world for all who live in it."
