Memorial gift with a charitable bent - 11/06/09
A majority of us would be "proud and pleased" if our parents left a gift to charity in their will - even if most of the estate was given away, according to a survey.
A substantial 80% of 1,050 people questioned said they would be happy for their parents to give a gift to a charity even if the majority of the estate was given away. The research was carried out by Remember A Charity, a group of 140 charities with the aim of raising the profile of legacy giving.
Professor Cathy Pharoah, an expert on charitable giving at the Cass Business School, said: "Families are an important place for passing on the values of giving, and this research shows that children can feel very proud of their parents' desire to support the causes they care about through legacies."
Stephen George, chair of Remember A Charity and head of legacies for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC), added: "This research flips the issue of charity-giving in wills on its head. Despite what many parents may think, it seems many of us are very happy to see a proportion of our parent's estate go to charity."
