Make classic rock a memorial gift - 26/06/09
Those looking for memorial gifts would do well to 'tap' into the rich resurgence in rock music seen over the past 12 months.
And to get a good idea about which act to go for, music lovers are advised to check out the shortlist for Classic Rock magazine's Rock Roll of Honour, which sees heavy metal jokers Spinal Tap go head to head with giants of the genre AC/DC.
Rock parody Spinal Tap was created for the 1984 spoof rockumentary 'This is Spinal Tap', but the members of the band later went on to play and release tracks under that name, including their comeback album "Back from the Dead" released this year to mark the 25th anniversary of the film.
At a launch in London's Hyde Park, AC/DC were nominated in three categories in the annual hall of fame: Album of the Year; Band of the Year; and Event of the Year,
The band burst back into the charts last year with Black Ice, their first studio album since 2000. They go up against Spinal Tap for the latter category, while rock veterans Iron Maiden picked up a string of nominations for Band of the Year.
Geoff Barton, Classic Rock's editor-at-large, said: "Everyone tells you the record industry is in dire straits but to be honest there's never been a better time for classic rock music."
