Madonna's memorial gift is a school - 29/10/09
Madonna's memorial gift to Malawi - a country that has given her two adopted children - is a £9 million school which will open in 2011.
Called the Raising Malawi Academy for Girls, it will support 500 students and place emphasis on mathematics and science.
The 51-year-old pop star marked the construction of the building by planting a Moringa tree at the site of the school in Chinkhota, around 10 kilometres from the Malawian capital Lilongwe.
She said: "If this school is a success - with God-willing it will be - we will replicate it not only in Malawi but in other parts of the world as well."
Madonna adopted her son David from the southern African country in 2008 and daughter Mercy earlier this year.
The two children, along with the singer's eldest daughter Lourdes and son Rocco, accompanied her on the trip.
Anjimile Mtila-Opponyo, the future principal of the academy said it will be modelled along the lines of the school built by talk show host Oprah Winfrey in South Africa and will have a progressive curriculum.
She added: "Madonna did not accept that Malawian women would not study science to become doctors."
