Jacks and Olivias get most baby gifts - 09/09/09

The most popular names given to babies last year were Jack and Olivia, according to official statistics.

Babies named Jack received more baby gifts than any other, as the name stayed at the top spot for the 14th year running in England and Wales.

Olivia was in third place in 2007, but become most popular for 2008 parents overall, despite Ruby being top choice for a second time in Wales. It seems some names have an enduring popularity, with only one new entry to the top 10 girls names and none at all for the top 10 boys.

After Olivia at number one, most popular girls names were Ruby, Emily, Grace, Jessica, Chloe, Sophie, Lily, Amelia and a top ten debut by Evie.

For boys, the order ran Jack, Oliver, Thomas, Harry, Joshua, Alfie, Charlie, Daniel, James and William.

Regional variations for boys were more evident than girls, as most London boys were called Daniel, Oliver was first choice for the South, and Jack was most popular in the North, East and Midlands.

Mohammed reached 16th place in the overall list, was in the top 10 in the Humber, London, West Midlands and Yorkshire but came 151st in the South-west.
