Holidays make best Christmas gifts - 22/12/09

Sunny holidays are proving to be the most popular Christmas gifts this year, according to a survey that found many people would rather take a festive break than have traditional presents.

Travelsupermarket.com found that more than half of those polled said they would prefer a holiday, with most of those favouring hot climates. Only 8% of people said they would like a skiing holiday.

Last year, fewer people said they needed a holiday, with just 46% opting for a break over presents. People in Wales showed the most enthusiasm to get away from it all, with 57% saying a trip would be their ideal present.

However, people in Scotland were less keen to go away this year than last year, with support for festive holidays falling to 39%, compared with last year's 57%.

Travelsupermarket.com said the best-value winter destinations at present were Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia and the Indian resort of Goa, with the best winter sun found in the Canary Islands, Dubai and Morocco.

Bob Atkinson, of travelsupermarket.com, said: "Last year we discovered that the traditional Christmas celebrations are evolving as more and more people are keen to get away from it all over the festive holiday."
