Firefighters sent wedding gifts - 10/09/09
A couple of firefighters decided to get married on the most appropriate day for two members of the emergency services, tying the knot on the ninth day of the ninth month of 2009.
Mike Dyer and Barbara James, both from Gloucestershire, chose the special day so their wedding date could be recorded as 999. The couple travelled to Stroud register office in a fire engine, while guests may have been comparing their ideas for 'emergency' themed wedding gifts.
Ms James, 40, who joined the services as a retained firefighter a year ago and works as an electronics technician at Renishaw, in Wooton-Under-Edge, Gloucestershire, said: "I met Mike when we worked together in a hotel in Tetbury. He was always rushing off to a fire or something and I thought, 'I could do that'.
"At first I wondered whether I would be able to do it or whether I might be scared. But when I talked to other women in the service, I realised I was being silly and decided to go for it," she added.
Electrician Mr Dyer, 49, who is a retained firefighter and the watch manager at Tetbury Fire Station, said: "If you told me when I joined-up 30 years ago I would end up marrying a firefighter from my own station I would never have believed it."
