Family owes baby gift to fire crew - 27/08/09
An expectant mother heading to hospital has given birth to a baby boy on the forecourt of a fire station in Sussex.
The unnamed couple from Littlehampton rushed to the Worthing fire station for help when the expectant mother went into labour before reaching the hospital.
Firefighters and Maisie Rudkin, crew manager, at the station came to their rescue by administering first aid to the mother and helping deliver the baby gift.
Ms Rudkin said: "It was clear that the baby couldn't wait any longer and they were forced to pull over on to the station forecourt as they weren't going to make it to the hospital.
"It was all very unexpected but having children myself, I sat with her and reassured her throughout."
As soon as the paramedics arrived, the expectant mother was moved to the ambulance where she gave birth, Ms Rudkin said.
The mother and the newborn were later taken to Worthing Hospital and are said to be healthy.
A spokesman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: "It's certainly an incident Blue Watch will never forget."
