Burial 'should be a memorial gift' - 12/10/09
Most people would prefer not to be buried in a traditional plot but rather be remembered with a memorial gift like being laid to rest in a treasured place, a survey has revealed.
Research by Age Concern showed that 55% of people would not like to be buried in a standard cemetery, but have not told their loved ones.
More exotic choices were often made, including a favourite childhood place, a former holiday destination, or even their own garden.
A council tip, the desert, the Le Mans race track and a scrap yard were some of the more unusual choices of burial locations.
Sharon Dobson, from the charity, said: "Our research highlights that although many of us have some interesting ideas about our final resting place, wishes such as these can easily go unfulfilled without some sort of plan in place."
According to Age Concern, who surveyed 2,068 adults over 16, only one in 10 Britons have made definite plans for a funeral, while 30% refuse to think about it at all.
