Birthday gifts for special dog - 07/05/09
The world's oldest dog has celebrated her 21st birthday with a day at New York Dog Hotel and Spa.
Chanel, a dachshund from New York, was also visited by an official from the Guinness World Records to present her owners with a special gift confirming their pet's status as the oldest dog on the planet.
Although she is not as active as her younger days when she used to enjoy running for miles, Chanel still takes short walks in warm weather despite her cataracts, white fur and being 147-years-old in dog years.
Her owners Denice and Karl Shaugnessey treated Chanel, who wears doggy glasses to protect her eyes, to a birthday bash and cake and collected the certificate to mark the milestone birthday.
A 28-year-old dog from America called Butch was the previous holder of the title, but he died in 2003.
Another canine competing for the coveted title was Bella, a Labrador cross from Derbyshire, but she died at the age of 29 and there was never any proof of her age so she never officially held the record.
