Baby gifts for Asda birth mother - 19/01/10
Three Asda employees have helped a woman deliver her baby in the supermarket, a spokeswoman has confirmed.
Baby gifts await the woman, who went into labour in one of the toilets at Asda's store in Wakefield, West Yorkshire at around 1am on Thursday.
The three staff members - Les Hepworth, Corrine Armitage and Karen Booth - helped the woman, who did not wish to be named, into the store's cafe.
They also got towels and pillows from the aisles to make the mother-to-be comfortable. Though an ambulance was called, the baby boy seemed to be unable to wait, with its head and shoulders already showing.
Mr Hepworth is trained for first-aid, but did not know anything about childbirth. He was guided by paramedics over the phone.
The baby came out just as the ambulance arrived at the store.
Both mother and child are healthy, the Asda spokeswoman said, adding that the store would be sending the new mum a bumper pack of nappy essentials.
