Baby gifts boom in rural village - 04/09/09
The market for baby gifts in a corner of rural Cambridgeshire is flourishing thanks to a baby boom in the village of Cambourne.
With a birth rate of nearly twice the national average, it saw 24 babies born per 1,000 people in 2007.
The council reports that the population has risen to more than 7,500 in recent years after the building of 4,000 new homes, a supermarket and business park.
Says a spokesman: "The parish is made up of five villages, including the development of Cambourne, which some people would think of as a small town.
"It has a high percentage of young couples and, not surprisingly, its population has grown quickly since it was founded a decade ago."
Coincidentally - or not - the nearby village of Bourn is home to the Bourn Hall fertility clinic.
