Vatican denies unique gift rumour - 22/04/09
The Vatican has denied reports that the Pope is planning to present the Prince of Wales with a unique gift when he visits Rome with his wife the Duchess of Cornwall.
It has been rumoured that Pope Benedict XVI would present Charles with a luxury facsimile of the 1530 appeal by English peers to Pope Clement VII for the annulment of Henry's marriage to Catherine of Aragon.
Given that Charles himself got divorced from Diana, Princess of Wales, the unique gift may be an unwelcome reminder, but the Vatican has denied that the Prince will receive the Henry VIII divorce memento as an official gift.
Charles, who has not been to the Vatican since his divorce from Diana, will introduce his second wife, Camilla, during a two-day trip to Italy.
Chief Vatican spokesman the Rev Federico Lombardi said it was untrue that the Pontiff would give the Prince the unusual gift, but the Scrinium, which is the publishing house linked to the Vatican archives, said they would like to give Charles a copy of the document themselves at some stage in the future.
The document records the battle Henry VIII had with the Vatican over his request to divorce. The dispute ultimately led to him separating the Anglican church from Rome, creating the Church of England and giving couples the right to a divorce with papal consent.
