Online memorial service planned - 19/03/09
A British crematorium is to install the internet to allow mourners as far away as Australia to take part in memorial services.
The technology will not only give loved ones the chance to view a service but they could also give eulogies and readings via the connection.
Broxtowe Borough Council in Nottinghamshire hopes that the new technology at Bramcote Crematorium, which will be installed by December, will enable elderly and disabled mourners who live locally to take part in services if they are unable to attend.
Labour councillor Milan Radulovic said: "Increasingly there are situations where bereaved families, who would have to travel vast distances, are unable to attend a memorial service."
He said the idea came about after talking to a group of family members in New Zealand who were unable to attend a funeral because they could not afford plane tickets. The cost of setting up a link for a relative or friend to watch a service could be as little as £20.
Not only could loved ones use the internet to view a memorial service but they could also send a memorial gift, such as a tree, online to ensure that happy memories live on.
