Eco-friendly gardens win top awards - 20/05/09
Top garden designers have been honoured at this year's Chelsea Flower Show, with dozens of them present at the special event to be awarded the prestigious gold medals.
Among the winners was Swedish landscape artist Ulf Nordfjell who won the award for best show garden with his design for the Daily Telegraph's architectural garden.
A garden based on a perfume created as a unique gift for Elizabeth I also scooped a top award, as did a herb garden with a hidden gnome and an underwater exhibit with piranhas.
Giles Landscapes' Fenland Alchemist Garden, based on the lives of traditional Fen dwellers who practised alchemy, won the award for best courtyard garden.
Designer Stephen Hall displayed his eco-friendly credentials when he explained that many of the materials used to build the exhibit had been reclaimed from his own home as he was doing it up - from the kitchen window right down to bricks, screws and hinges.
And the ethical theme continued with Helios winning the best urban garden prize for its "Eco-Chic" design aiming to green unloved spaces in cities.
