Classic gifts top Christmas lists - 14/12/09

Traditional Christmas gifts such as family board games and nativity sets will be taking pride of place under many a Christmas tree this year, according to high-street department store Selfridges, which has seen sales of classic gifts spike in recent weeks.

Classic family games including Scrabble, Operation and Monopoly as well as religious gifts such as Virgin Mary statues and bronze crosses have been selling out in many of the store's UK outlets as shoppers shun high-tech gadgetry and get back to basics with more traditional presents.

Sales of classic games have jumped by 20% year on year while updated versions of Monopoly and Guess Who? are attracting a new fan base. Sales of classic perfumes such as Chanel No 5 and Christian Dior's J'Adore are up 30%, according to Selfridges.

Anne Pitcher, Selfridges' buying and merchandising director, said: "This year, sales of traditional gifts and religious-themed decorations have proved most popular, as customers prepare for a return to the traditions of Christmas.

"Customers want to celebrate Christmas this year in a big way and Selfridges is here to help."
