Christmas gift arrives for Army dog - 26/03/09
An Army sniffer dog working in Afghanistan has finally received his very own Christmas gifts box thanks to the efforts of a dying RAF corporal.
Nine-year-old English Springer spaniel Jamie has been working in Helmand detecting explosives and weapons. When former Corporal John Evans heard last year that the plucky hound would be out in Afghanistan over the festive season without any toys, he decided to contact the Forces Christmas charity uk4u Thanks! and send a special Christmas gifts box.
Despite battling pneumonia, Mr Evans got together with some friends and managed to hand over a package of toys and treats to the charity.
Sadly, the caring ex-serviceman died a few days after sending the parcel. But with the help of the Ministry of Defence in tracking Jamie down, the parcel finally reached its intended recipient this week.
Mr Evans' widow, Barbara Evans from Abergele, North Wales, said: "I know that John would be thrilled that his present is now with Jamie."
Jamie's handler, Lance Corporal Jim Wilkinson, 23, said: "It's been a long tour for both me and Jamie and receiving these gifts means an enormous amount."
