Choose a tree as the perfect gift - 26/02/09

The National Forest Company is encouraging sons and daughters to splash out on Mother's Day and join their dearest in forging a small part of nature in the Plantatree scheme.

The project allows anyone the chance to choose a sapling - usually oak, ash or birch - and plant it in the New Forest with the satisfaction of knowing that they will not only be creating natural beauty, but also helping to protect the environment.

The National Forest Company is a public body established in 1995 to oversee the creation of a 200-square mile National Forest in the Midlands. To date more than seven million trees have been planted which has increased woodland cover in the forest from 6% to nearly 18%.

By spending £25, a gift certificate will be sent inviting the recipient to a special tree-planing ceremony where they will take their chosen sapling and plant it in the forest. They will then be able to return and see the fruits of their labour as the woodland blossoms in future years.
