'Worst Christmas tree' replaced - 03/12/09
A village Christmas tree which was ravaged by recent storms is set to be replaced, after questions were raised about whether it was the worst in the country.
Residents of Sacriston, County Durham were disappointed with their tree, after 2ft of it was ripped off during the bad weather.
It had originally been intended that the newly-planted tree would be allowed to grow over the years, giving the village a festive focal point.
But instead a tripod had to be put up around the remains of the tree, with the the lights attached to the metal frame.
They were officially switched on by Only Fools And Horses star John Challis, who played Boysie, and Emmerdale's James Baxter, but were met with complaints.
One onlooker said: "It's truly awful. It's not even in the middle of the frame. It looks like a twig stuck in the ground with Christmas lights stuck on a metal frame around it."
Durham County Council confirmed that the tree will be replaced. A spokeswoman said: "We will be planting it as soon as possible. It is a tree we hope will be as strong as the community, who we feel sure will cherish it for many Christmases to come."
