Trees bring parkland garden to life

Hundreds of trees will be planted across 100 acres of Northumberland to bring to life a 'lost' Capability Brown wooded parkland garden.

The famed 18th century landscaper first sketched the plan 250 years ago for the Grade II listed Kirkharle estate, but it was never realised.

After the design was found hidden in a desk draw by owner John Anderson, the Forestry Commission stepped forward to help create three major stands of woodland that will cover nine acres. It has provided a £4,000 grant to plant hundreds of beech, oak, Scots pine, shrubs and fruit trees in what promises to be a stunning public attraction.

Says Mr Anderson: "It's possible that the design reflects actual elements of the 18th century grounds, but it mainly contains Brown's ideas for the way it could be improved. Our plan is to fulfil his vision as far as we can, complete with serpentine lakes, woodland and footpaths that will pay homage to one of Northumberland's greatest sons."

And says Neil Dixon, woodland officer with the Forestry Commission: "It's certainly one of the most unusual planting schemes we have backed."
