Tongan King visits Army memorial - 20/01/10
The National Memorial Arboretum has played host to its first overseas head of state, the King of Tonga.
King Taufa'ahau Tupou V visited the site in Alrewas, Staffordshire, and also inspected the national Armed Forces Memorial nine years after the memorial opened its doors to the public.
The memorial bears the names of the thousands of service personnel killed since the end of the Second World War.
The esteemed visitor also presented military honours to two Tongan nationals who serve in the UK armed forces.
The National Memorial Arboretum - located in a sprawling 150-acre plot with around 50,000 maturing trees and 160 separate tributes to various branches of the armed services and other organisations - attracts about 300,000 visitors every year.
The Kingdom of Tonga is part of the Commonwealth, with a population of about 104,000. It was a British protectorate until 1970 before gaining full independence.
