Oak tree most recognisable British species - 15/05/09
The dependable oak is the only British tree that most of us can think of when asked to name the most common species found in our woods and parks, according to a new survey.
Only two fifths of those polled knew that conkers come from horse chestnut trees, and almost a quarter of respondents had no idea that oak trees grow from acorns.
The oak tree was the one that sprang most readily to mind for 88% of those questioned, with the second most commonly named tree the elm (28%), and ash in third place (26%).
The research also revealed that people weren't always able to identify some of the most common tree species - such as horse chestnut and hawthorn - from photographs.
When showed a series of images, 68% were able to recognise the oak, but only 37% could identify the silver birch. The most widely recognised tree was the creeper ivy, which was correctly named by 69%.
Meanwhile, 5% of those questioned were unable to identify any British trees at all.
The survey was commissioned by Forest Holidays, which operates camping and caravan sites in Forestry Commission land.
