Native tree project needs helpers

Eager environmental enthusiasts are being encouraged to get involved in a project in London to help manage a nature reserve, including the protection of native trees.

Groundwork London, an environmental charity, is looking for people to help with the project at Wormwood Scrubs Local Nature Reserve in Hammersmith.

It says volunteers will be able to experience the great outdoors, meet new friends and keep fit as a result of their efforts.

The nature reserve contains a wide variety of plants, birds, and other animals, including bats and common lizards. It is maintained by Groundwork London and Fulham Council.

Francesca Barker, nature conservation officer for Groundwork London, said: "There is nothing more rewarding than spending a few hours a month helping to preserve these precious places for wildlife in an urban city setting like London.

"Everyone is welcome to join in with these practical conservation sessions that include tree planting, hedge laying, surveying for a range of species and much more."

Volunteers do not need to have any previous experience as full training will be given. Tools and drinks will be provided, and £3 will be contributed to each volunteer to help towards travel costs.

Volunteer sessions run from 10:30am to 3:30pm on the second Saturday of each month and the last Tuesday of each month starting on January 9 and 26, respectively.

Those interested in volunteering should contact Francesca Barker on 020 8743 3040 or francesca.barker@groundwork.org.uk.
