Five-year forest survey launched - 07/09/09
The most comprehensive survey of forests in the UK has been launched by the Forestry Commission.
The commission said the woodlands would be "hugely important" in the battle against climate change and in coping with its impacts.
It is hoped that the survey of 15,000 woodland sites across England, Scotland and Wales spanning five years will help plan for "an uncertain future" that could be affected by climate change, Tim Rollinson, director-general of the Forestry Commission has said.
Woods and trees in Britain will be crucial in soaking up carbon and reducing the emissions that contribute to global warming. Wildlife and people will be better able to tackle impacts like hotter summers and increased risk of flooding.
The survey is aimed at examining the extent and health of British woodlands, including the amount of carbon they store. Changes in all sites will be monitored in the future.
Mr Rollinson said: "What we're doing with this survey is planning for an uncertain future, and that future is strongly linked to a changing climate.
"There's no doubt that woodland can be a substantial help with climate change, and we want to see more trees being planted."
He added that although the mitigation issue was under focus and also very important, adaptation was as significant.
