BBC criticised over poor tree care - 18/12/09
A BBC tree-planting demonstration has been criticised by the Arboricultural Association for making "seven key errors" during its broadcast prior to a world tree-planting record attempt earlier this month.
The association hit out at the demonstration, carried out by Autumnwatch presenter Martin Hughes-Games, ahead of the Tree O'Clock world record attempt, claiming that the presenter had made numerous errors ranging from incorrect hole depth to failing to check for signs of disease.
The addition of neat compost, little or no consideration for the protection of local wildlife and unloosened soil were also all cited as key failures in the BBC broadcast.
Nick Eden, director of the Arboricultural Association, said: "The BBC is there to provide a public service, but sadly, it has failed on this occasion.?
"The BBC need only have contacted any one of the Arboricultural Association's 2,000 members to have obtained the right advice about planting trees. Trees are critical to our future and we must get it right."
