Amateurs to design Olympic garden - 22/12/09
Two amateur garden designers are working to create a landscape for the Olympic Park, expected to be ready in time for the Games in 2012.
Wiltshire youngster Hannah Clegg and Rachel Read, of Colchester, Essex, received the most votes among hundreds of others to win the RHS Olympic Park Great British Garden Competition.
They visited the site in Stratford, east London, where professionals will help them bring their ideas for the quarter acre garden to life.
Winner of the under-16 competition, 11-year-old Hannah from Malmesbury, said: "I'd like to say a thank you to all the people who voted for my design and I'm really looking forward to working towards the final garden."
Hannah incorporated Olympic treasures such as a tree of golden acorns along with orchards and vegetable patches into her design, while Ms Read featured a spiral time line including traditional flowers and plaques naming British Olympic gold medallists since 1908 in hers.
Ms Read, who won the over-17 contest, said: "To see the garden come to life will be amazing and it's a real honour to be part of it."
The park's landscape team will hold workshops for the winners to design a single garden incorporating their ideas.
