Volcano fall gran saved by tree - 11/03/09
A tree could be the perfect Mother`s Day gift for a granny whose life was saved by a root after she fell down an 80-foot volcano.
Maureen Evason, 66, was walking in the Santiago del Teide region of Tenerife when she fell backwards off a high path.
Her husband Robert, 62, said she was "miraculously" stopped by a tree root which pinned her to the hillside. He said had it not been for the root she would have fallen a further 100 feet and would have died.
Mrs Evason suffered multiple fractures and spent two months in hospital before she was able to return home.
Her husband said: "It was a miracle how it happened. I've no idea how she got in that position, the root came over her head and was so tight we had to cut it off to release her. It saved her life. Had she gone any further that would have been it."
