Tree lovers win replanting victory - 26/02/09
Ethical and environmental victories by tree lovers have been won with the help of Red Rose Forest and the Prince of Wales.
As a result, Salford Council has now agreed to replace dead or diseased trees that are to be felled on a leafy city street.
And in the case of Network Rail, hundreds of trees threatened with "carnage" along a stretch of track at Heaton Chapel in Stockport have been spared - for the moment.
The council had announced plans to cut down or prune 53 trees in Pine Grove because they pose a danger to children walking to the local primary school.
It has now said that "after close discussions with residents and Red Rose Forest we are agreeing a planting scheme based on expert advice that best addresses the concerns raised by people who live in the area."
Meanwhile, Network Rail has promised that tree experts will carry out assessments and consult with residents before any work begins.
Says Phil Rowbotham, chairman of The Heaton Moor Conservation Area Residents' Group: "We have won a partial victory in delaying the work for four weeks, and we will keep on fighting to prevent this carnage."
