Team of tree-lovers dig to victory - 09/12/09
Conservationists in Northern Ireland have fought off stiff competition from two rival tree-planting teams in England by setting a new record for the number of trees planted in one hour.
The Derry team, which included Girls Aloud star Nadine Coyle, planted 26,422 trees on the banks of the River Foyle near Londonderry under the watchful eye of a Guinness adjudicator.
The green-fingered volunteers were up against two other bids taking place in Essex and Hertfordshire as part of the the BBC's Breathing Places Tree O'Clock campaign.
Sue Holden, chief executive of The Woodland Trust said: "Together we are all record breakers today,
"Congratulations to Northern Ireland and to all our teams and supporters for a fantastic effort.
"Today 26,422 trees have been planted, beating the current Guinness World Record of 18,124, which is a phenomenal achievement."
There were also smaller scale efforts undertaken all across the UK, including one at the home of the Northern Ireland parliament at Stormont.
