Prince honoured with unique gifts - 19/05/09
One of the highlights of this year's Chelsea Flower Show was the launch of a new variety of rose developed for the Prince of Wales and named after his estate in Gloucestershire.
But the Highgrove flower was not the only special gift to be bestowed upon Charles this week, as he was also given a top horticultural award.
The prestigious Victoria Medal of Honour from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) was presented to the heir to the throne by his mother, the Queen.
The award - the highest accolade that the RHS can confer - can only be held by 63 horticulturists at any one time, to mark the number of years Queen Victoria reigned over the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
The RHS said that Charles's unique gift for demonstrating a "passion for plants, sustainable gardening and the environment" made him a deserving holder of the medal.
The only other member of the Royal Family to have received it was Charles's grandmother, the Queen Mother, in 1961.
The Highgrove bloom will be sold to raise funds for the Prince's Charities Foundation.
