Plateau gets nature reserve status - 13/10/09
A famous plateau has officially been awarded the status of National Nature Reserve, it has been revealed.
Kinder Scout in the Peak District was handed the title by the Government's advisor on the natural environment, Natural England.
The moorland plateau joins a range of other reserves that help conserve vulnerable habitats. National Nature Reserves (MMRs) were originally created to protect sensitive features and provide "outdoor laboratories" for research, but they have now been opened up to the public, schools and specialists audiences so they can experience England's natural heritage.
Kinder Scout, which is owned and managed by the National Trust, is made up of 700 hectares of various upland habitats and supports several upland breeding birds.
It is famous as the site of the 1932 Mass Trespass, when ramblers deliberately trespassed on the land to highlight weaknesses in English law that denied walkers access to areas of open country and public footpaths that used to be rights of way.
