Olympic Park to be a 'green oasis'

The Olympic Park will be transformed into a "stunning green oasis" complete with tree-lined roads, hanging gardens and parkland, it has been announced.

Olympics minister Tessa Jowell said work is under way to transform more than 250 acres of former industrial land in east London into parkland for the London 2012 Games - afterwards becoming the UK's largest new urban park in over 100 years.

More than 4,000 trees, 300,000 wetlands plants and hundreds of thousands of flowers and bulbs will be planted to fill the parklands.

New plans developed with the Olympic Park Legacy Company also include 30ft high hanging gardens on the footbridge from Stratford City, with meadows, lawns, shrubs and rows of trees welcoming people over the main walking entrance into the park.

There will also be a tranquil garden square centred on the Eton Manor Boys Club war memorial and lined with sweet gum trees that turn red around Remembrance Day.

Ms Jowell said: "The Olympics will create a stunning green oasis in east London that in legacy will join the long list of world famous parks London is so lucky to have."
