NHS calls for green centenary gifts - 06/10/09
The NHS has launched a project to plant trees which, if combined, would create a forest the size of 2,500 football pitches.
The project aims to improve the surroundings of hospitals and similar areas for patients and staff.
The NHS Forest will see 1.3 million trees planted across the UK, with one for every health service employee, and eventually reduce the service's carbon footprint by 10%.
Trees will be planted in and around health facilities, with the hope that they will be a focal point for ceremonies to mark 100 years of the NHS in 2048.
The first sapling was planted at Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool, after it was donated by Mount Pleasant Primary School in the Wirral. Alder Hey is working with the Forestry Commission on a £288 million facility which will be surrounded by parkland.
Louise Shepherd, chief executive of Alder Hey NHS Foundation Trust, said: "The NHS Forest is a fantastic opportunity to create trees and natural environments around our hospitals. I am sure it will capture the imagination of the general public."
