Indian man on tree planting mission - 04/11/09
A former schoolteacher in India is celebrating the half-way milestone in his mission to plant 100,000 trees.
Chandra Bhushan Tiwari set about the task in the north Indian city of Lucknow in 1992 and now claims he has reached the 50,000 mark.
The 40-year-old said he was proud of what he has achieved so far and is determined to see the job completed.
"I just want to achieve my mission at the earliest. I cannot put into words what I feel when I come across saplings planted by me now transformed into trees," Mr Tiwari told an Indian news agency.
When he left a teaching position at a government school to devote all his time to the green cause, there was opposition from relatives and neighbours.
"They used to laugh at me," he said. "But I did not pay any heed and continued with my work. And today the same people who used to laugh at me admire my efforts.
"I feel a sense of pride in planting saplings, as in a way, I believe what I am doing today will definitely be useful for the coming generations."
