Fruit trees grow best baby gifts - 24/09/09

Fresh fruit grown on small-scale allotments beside a tree-lined canal may be the perfect healthy baby gift for young families seeking a slice of the good life.

British Waterways has donated 18 "baby-grow" plots on 2,000 square meters of space alongside the Grand Union Canal in West London.

Says environment manager Leela O'Dea: "These new growing spaces are smaller versions of the traditional allotment plot.

"Given the shortage of allotments in London and the sometimes daunting size of traditional allotments, these are an ideal way to boost the number of people growing their own.

"The waterways provide spaces, activities and habitats for all sorts of people and wildlife to enjoy, from wild flower patches to formal landscaping."

British Waterways manages 2,200 miles of canals and rivers across the UK, and has donated the space to a local group, the Charity of William Hobbayne.

London Mayor Boris Johnson and his food tsar Rosie Boycott, who are aiming to create 2,012 new growing spaces in the capital by 2012, have welcomed the 'green' initiative.
