City moves to cut carbon footprint - 24/03/09
CO2 emissions in Scotland's biggest city are to be targeted by a new Climate Change Partnership, set up with the sole purpose of reducing the carbon footprint of some of its major organisations.
Partners in the Glasgow alliance - the only one in Scotland to commit its members to specific carbon reduction targets - include police, a fire service and a health board.
Over the next five years, the partners aim to cut their combined C02 emissions by more than 32,000 tonnes, giving a boost to the environment equivalent to an additional 160,000 mature trees planted around the city.
Members of the Glasgow Climate Change Partnership have pledged to cut their combined carbon footprint by some 6,500 tonnes a year. Initiatives that will help them do this include car sharing and making use of public transport, solar water heating and biomass heating systems.
Glasgow Community Planning Partnership chairman James Coleman commented: "By making this commitment to reduce emissions, our members can help to bring home the realities of environmental damage to every section of the community - and encourage them to play a part in securing a more sustainable, safer future for Glasgow."
