Charity looking for tree guardians - 03/03/09
A charity set up to promote the importance of trees in the UK is looking to recruit a new wave of wardens in Wiltshire.
The network of volunteers will be on the look out for early signs of disease or vandalism in a bid to help protect the county's trees.
The Tree Council said locally collected seeds will also be used by the wardens to create tree nurseries, while workshops will be being set up to teach about caring for mature trees and practical planting.
A series of visits to woodlands and nurseries is being planned and Wiltshire's tree wardens will take part in the Cranborne Chase Woodfair which showcases rural activities.
The Tree Council's Jon Stokes said: "Wiltshire has been a black hole for tree wardens and we are delighted that the gap is being filled."
The Tree Council is an umbrella body of around 180 organisations working to promote better care for all trees in the UK. The first Tree Wardens were introduced in 1990, as a response to the disastrous storms which hit southern England.
