Campaign to save Amazon rainforest - 25/11/09
An environmental charity is urging Britons to support a campaign against deforestation in the Amazon ahead of the UN climate summit in Copenhagen.
Cool Earth is calling around 100,000 people to each protect a rainforest tree threatened by imminent illegal logging in the teeming Rio Ene valley in Peru.
They are also calling to help prevent up to three million tonnes of carbon dioxide being emitted into the atmosphere as result of deforestation.
Celebrities including Jarvis Cocker, Emma Thompson and Ricky Gervais are backing the charity, which has mapped the 12 most valuable hardwood species of trees in the valley, some less than three kilometres from the path of logging gangs and bulldozers.
In collaboration with local communities, Cool Earth is aiming to protect valuable trees in the forest, in turn protecting trees in the vicinity and the wildlife they support. Each tree helps prevent up to 30 tonnes of CO2 from reaching the atmosphere.
Aiming to prove that individuals can help fight global warming without waiting for politicians, the charity is asking people to join its Tree For A £ drive to save three million tonnes of CO2 in the three weeks before the Copenhagen talks.
