Britons urge more 'green' measures

Although two thirds of Britons think they are not doing enough to protect the environment in the face of global warming, less than half believe they can make a difference, a survey showed.

The survey, carried out by the Guardian to coincide with the launch of the 10:10 campaign, found that 61% believed they could do more to stop environmental damage, while 32% thought that current efforts were enough to tackle climate change.

Forty six percent of Britons think that they could contribute to countering climate change, and measures like using low energy light bulbs (85%), turning down heating (86%), could help.

Compared with a poll from 2005, more people think that driving and flying should decrease, and more food should be bought from Europe. Yet, only a third favoured a pay-per-mile tax for road usage, and 29% were willing to shell out more for greener energy.

The poll found that support for wind farms has increased by 10% to 79%, and resistance to nuclear energy has decreased.

Even though 85% believed that climate change is, or will be a threat, and 71% acknowledged that human activity was the cause for global warming, 52% said that climate change would continue regardless of human activity.

However, 23% of respondents denied that humans were responsible for climate change.
