Britain pledges £295m for forests - 21/12/09
The UK has promised to contribute at least ?£295 million to tackle deforestation worldwide as it pushes for a global treaty on climate change.
The money is part of the £1.5 billion Britain has pledged to a six-nation fast-start funding package meant?to enable developing countries to manage the effects of? global warming from 2010 to 2012.
Other countries who have committed to the $10 billion (£6.15bn) funding stream are Australia, France, Japan, Norway and the United States.
Around $3.5 billion (£2.15bn) of their share of the package will go to anti-deforestation efforts through the REDD+ project.
More funds to?protect forests is one of the key demands made by developing nations at the UN climate change summit in Copenhagen.
The loss of tree cover is one of the major reasons for global warming and countries most affected are seeking payment to prevent the destruction.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who has been meeting leaders from rainforest nations, including Brazil's president Luiz In?cio Lula da Silva, urged more countries to pledge funds, saying the issue was? "central" to securing a global climate deal.
He added: "Deforestation accounts for almost a fifth of global emissions, and the forests of the rainforest nations provide a global service in soaking up the pollution of the world."
