Britain 'a nation of garden lovers' - 03/08/09
A National Trust survey has revealed that more than 70% of people think spending time in the garden is necessary for improving quality of life as well as keeping the spark of romance alive.
Britain remains a nation of garden lovers and on summer weekends, 11 million people will be out digging in flower beds, planting trees, tending their plants and mowing the lawn, the report said.
Many people think of it as a place to 'unwind', while one in three feel gardens are romantic and can boost love life.
Four out of five people surveyed by Ipsos MORI thought children should be taught about gardening and growing plants at school.
Gardening can have the same benefits of taking a walk, the Space to Grow report from the trust said, with weeding for 30 minutes burning the same amount of calories as a half hour walk.
Celebrity gardener Alan Titchmarsh said: "Never has access to a garden been more important for our spiritual and physical wellbeing than it is in today's rapidly changing landscape."
