Mars commits to ethical production

Confectionery giant Mars has demonstrated its commitment to corporate social responsibility with the announcement that all its Galaxy chocolate bars in the UK and Ireland will be made with sustainably sourced cocoa by 2010.

The company has pledged to certify its entire cocoa supply as sustainably sourced by 2020 and said that some 160 million Galaxy bars will carry the Rainforest Alliance Certified trademark seal by next year.

Mars has already proven its ethical status, achieving Rainforest Alliance certification last year for three Flavia coffee offerings under the Mars Drinks brand.

Howard-Yana Shapiro, global director of plant science and external research at Mars, said: "Rainforest Alliance certification will make a positive difference for everyone involved from cocoa farmer to chocolate bar.

"We aim to improve the livelihood of farmers and their communities, protect the environment and wildlife around them, and ensure the future of our business."

Fellow chocolate producer Cadbury is also taking measures to reduce its carbon footprint after announcing that it is to make its Dairy Milk bars Fairtrade by summer 2009.

"We welcome any move by business to support farmers in the developing world," a spokeswoman said.
